Spirituality in Clinical Practice: Why It’s Important and How to Bring It into the Room

    • Registration begins at 8:30 am; workshop: 9 am - 4 pm
    • Lunch will be provided (only) to those who have pre-registered.
    • This workshop will be held in the May Gallery of the John K. Mullen of Denver Library.  If you click the the campus mapyou will find the library at coordinates E 15.  The entrance is on the west side (left on the map), across from Shahan and McGivney Halls.  Parking is available in front of these buildings. Should you wish to take Metro, the library is a short walk from the Brookland/Catholic University station on the  Red Line, which is shown on the map at coordinates J 15.

Understanding the theory behind spirituality’s impact on psychotherapy provides a firm intellectual foundation for the powerful work of integration. Presenter Kenneth Pargament is an internationally renowned, award-winning scholar who brings a balanced view of religious life to scientists and health professionals. A professor of clinical psychology at Bowling Green State University, his books include Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy: Understanding and Addressing the Sacred and The Psychology of Religion and Coping.

Practicing Transformation: Insights from Meditation and Psychotherapy

Meditation and psychotherapy are twin healing paths that together can lead to greater wisdom, compassion and wholeness. Explore their interface with two seasoned guides. Sharon Salzberg is one of America’s leading meditation teachers, guiding meditation retreats worldwide since 1974. She is cofounder of the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Mass., and author of The Kindness Handbook, Faith and Lovingkindness. Mark Epstein, MD, is a psychiatrist in private practice in New York City who has explored and written extensively about the interface of Buddhism and psychotherapy. Among his works are Thoughts without a Thinker, Open to Desire, Going on Being and Psychotherapy without the Self. He teaches at New York University. Presented in collaboration with Grace Productions.

Spirituality and Ethics

Michael Sheridan, PhD & Cathleen Gray, PhD

Take advantage of a session on ethics tailored to this special realm of therapeutic engagement. Michael Sheridan is research associate professor at the Center for Spirituality and Social Work, Catholic University. Her wide experience includes clinical practice and administration in health, mental health, juvenile and criminal justice and family service settings. Cathleen Gray is director of the Center for Spirituality and Social Work. Recently named a "top therapist" by Washingtonian Magazine, she has been in direct clinical practice since 1968 and teaching clinical practice since 1975.

This seminar series provides important time and space to process with colleagues the information gained from the workshops and translate it into specific, client-based ways of working. Kathie Hart, MSW, LCSW-C, has 20 years of clinical social work experience and an active, lifelong interest in how spiritual traditions inform the art of living.
