"We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience." Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, SJ (attributed)
The Center for Spirituality and Social Work (CSSW) is a research educational center dedicated to the promotion of spiritual presence in social work practice. The Center was founded in 2004 by Dr. Elizabeth Smith. The field of social work is broad, embracing the strength of individuals, families and communities. The perspective of social work is bio-psycho-social-spirtual. The Center for Spirituality emphasizes the spirtual perspective of individuals as well as the community as a whole.
Our belief is that nurturing one's own spiritual self benefits not only ourselves, but those whom we serve. To that end we offer continuing education programs for health and mental health practitioners as well as members of the broader community. Our director, Dr. Cathleen Gray, develops our educational programs as well as works with other community resources to present spiritually focused programs (see link to current and recent programs).
We are engaged in state-of-the-art social work research (see link to research). The Center is committed to performing rigorous research relating to spiritual practices, needs assessment and interventions. Our director of research, Dr. Michael Sheridan, has recently been awarded a significant grant from the Templeton Foundation to study spirituality in African American caregivers.
